A Line of Eldest Sons Down to the 4th Generation

Somewhere in the concrete jungle of Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, lives a little kid who, because of his family lineage, gets the same sort of attention as a pink panda of China or a hybrid orchid of Singapore. And being only two years old, he doesn’t know it, of course.

But first, a little family history. My late father was the eldest son of his father. I am my father’s eldest son, so that makes me my late grandfather’s eldest son’s eldest son. According to Chinese traditions, I was entitled to an equal share of my late grandfather’s inheritance as my father and uncles. Unfortunately, although my grandfather was in a lucrative wine business in Singapore, he was just a sleeping partner and over-trusted his active partners who cheated him of his money. Except for some old teak furniture, nobody inherited anything when he died. But I digress.

My son is technically my eldest son, since he is the only child. That then makes him my grandfather’s eldest son’s eldest son’s eldest son.

Now this little kid referred to earlier is his eldest son. Oh my word, what does that make him now? That makes him my grandfather’s eldest son’s (my father’s) eldest son’s (that’s me) eldest son’s (my son’s) eldest son. That little kid is a 4th generation eldest son!

In the days of the imperial Chinese dynasties, an eunuch and at least two army generals would be given the sole task of ensuring that no harm befell this little fellow, and a team of the finest imperial physicians would be commissioned to ensure that, when the time came, he produced at least one male to continue the line of Eldest Sons.

Well, we’ll see what happens in about 25 years’ time. The worst he can do (to break that line) is to become a monk.

Grandpa fishtail! Mister grumpy is so cute!

BTW, my father-in-law, though penniless, also emphasised a lot on such stuffs. My MIL got the names of 5 grandsons engraved on the tombstone eventhough at that time, he has only two. (I was just married. The two are from the eldest son's line.) I exceeded the quota, so to say.

You need to be wary of bicycle seats too. I mean the risk is low, but you never know. ;)

Cute lad. You can tell he's a take charge guy.

In my wife's family my son is the only grandson out of seven grandchildren (and it does not seem like there will be an eighth). Boy gets really spoiled. Quite honestly sometimes I consider what jerks my father and stepfather were and I think it might not be a bad idea to let my son take his gong gong's name. My wife's father is certainly worthy of more respect.

wow! you would be the envy of those very traditionalist family, having so many first-born as sons down the generations.

you have a cute and grumpy grandson, fishtail. :)

#Yvonne, eeks? What did I do?
#5xmom, your MIL actually engraved names of 3 grandsons even before they were born? Wow. And then you exceeded the quota, lolz!
#taya@kangta, thanks! He's already quite a fine screamer now :)
#jomel, perhaps he needs a girlfriend to make him less grumpy. He's already in Pre-Kindy.
#may, he probably would, considering his father was born on Valentine's Day itself!
#simon, he looked a bit like Napoleon when he was younger.
#simple american, alright then; no bicycle, no tae kuan do, and no tight jeans for him.
#lucia, yep; raised a few eyebrows when I pointed this out to my aunties during CNY reunion last week.
#de book worm, wait till he finds out petrol prices later :(
#bex, let's hope your girl cousin doesn't scream like this guy does!
#fran, you're the eldest daughter aren't you? Perhaps you may think about starting a line of 'eldest daughters'?
